[va-bird] Re: Selasphorus Hummingbirds

Maybe that saying about "things coming in threes" has some truth. We
have three hummingbirds near Lynchburg.

We have one Selasphorus (pretty good photograph) in Amherst County that
has been visiting a feeder (seen everyday) since 22 October.

The next report is quite interesting, and I had reported this sighting
earlier on the VA ListServe. On 6 December 2001, a Selasphorus appeared
at a hummingbird feeder at the home of Wanda Pleasants in Lynchburg. The
bird remained through the winter, was observed by many members of the
local Bird Club, seen on the Lynchburg Winter Bird Count, and was last
observed on 3 April 2002. A hummingbird showed up at the same feeder on
20 November 2006, and has been seen every day (that someone looked for
it) since then. It was still present on 29 November.

Today I received another report of a bird in Bedford County that has been
seen at the feeder since late September. I spent 30 minutes waiting for
the bird to show-up today, but it did not visit the feeder while I was
there. The homeowner said that it had been seen 10 to 12 times earlier
in the day (before I arrived at 3:30 pm).

For late November...that's quite a few hummingbirds in the Lynchburg
area.
