In the fall of 2002 Rockingham County had 3 Selasphorus hummingbirds. In two
of those three locations, a Selasphorus was again seen in 2003.
Phyllis Rinaca and Lucille Weber of Grottoes, VA, have informed me that their
Selasphorus (likely Rufous) Hummingbird, which arrived last fall (2003) on
October 7th, was last seen on Sunday, February 15th. That's a winter stay of
18
weeks and 5 days, or 131 days all told. This was considerably longer than
their previous year's Selasphorus, which Mary Gustafson said (after examining
their photographs of it) was clearly a Rufous. That bird was first noted on
October 20th and was last seen on November 22nd, a couple of days before Mary
arrived hoping to band it--a stay of 34 days.
The other 2003 bird providing a second annual record was at the feeder of Sam
and Lillie Flora in Harrisonburg, VA. Their 2002 bird was present from
October 15 to November 24 (41 days); their 2003 visitor from October 24 to
November
14 (22 days).
Rockingham's birders, and these little creatures' hosts, are looking forward
to the next Selasphorus season!
