[va-bird] Screech Owl & Prothonatory at Redwing Park, Virginia Beach

Birders,
This afternoon we decided to go into Redwing Park (off General Booth Blvd, Va
Bch). We walked down the right side in the back of the park on the white
trail. All was quiet except for the thousand Grackles that came when I pished.
We
walked to the water in hopes of seeing Prothonotaries that hang out there. No
luck. On the way back just past the end of the raised boardwalk, Tom spotted a
Prothonotary Warbler. He wasn't singing just kind of darting around. He was
joined by a pair of Titmice. Then scanning the tree where the Prothon. was,
near the trunk, I spotted a red-phase Screech Owl. Thats when I realized the
Prothon. was giving a very audible alarm "chip" and buzzing the owl. Of course
the
little screech didn't budge and only studied us (about 25 ft. away). He soon
grew tired of us and the Prothon. going crazy and closed his eyes for a little
nap. Wow ! Made my day for sure! Little else was going on at
Redwing...Great-crested Flycatchers, Robins, Pileated Woodpecker, Red-bellied
Woodpecker,
Cardinals and a half bizzilion Robins.
