Hello VA-Birders,
I woke up to a 4 AM alarm this morning and made my way out to the western edge
of Fauquier County to see if I could get a couple of birds I haven't yet seen
this year. The temperature gauge read 34 degrees and the wind was brisk, but
it calmed down as it got closer to sunrise. I was able to get one NORTHERN
SAW-WHET OWL to respond to calls on a pull-off along Freezeland Road near Blue
Mountain, VA. I heard or saw no other owl species.
Later at the lower end of Thompson WMA at the pull-off from Leeds Manor Road, I
flushed a RUFFED GROUSE from a thicket near the trail. It flew to a large
patch of brambles, and after a few minutes, started clucking while remaining
hidden.
Jay Keller,
Arlington
