VA-Birders,
I stopped at Sunrise Valley Park in Reston, Fairfax County this AM before a
business meeting. I was quite surprised to find a nicely-plumaged SAVANNAH
SPARROW along the trail that runs between the pond and the BAE Systems building
in the brush. I did a double take, expecting it to be a pale-plumaged Song
Sparrow, but it flew to a nearby branch, showing off its short tail and pale
lores, posing for a few minutes. Was it there all Summer?
Also observed were six COMMON NIGHTHAWKS flying overhead with associating
CHIMNEY SWIFTS, and two EASTERN KINGBIRDS refueling on the boardwalk across the
pond.
Best,
Jay Keller
