On Sunday a Rufous/Allen's Hummingbird appeared at
one of our frozen feeders at 7:30 am. It's appearance kicked me into gear
and I thawed, cleaned out, and refilled our four hummingbird feeders and put
them all out for it to sample. It returned several times throughout the
day, while I kept bringing the feeders back in, one at a time, to thaw them
out. At the end of the day I brought all of them in for the night.
The next morning I replaced all the feeders, but it wasn't until 9:30am that I
saw it first return. It reappeared sporatically throughout the day as it
did today as well. Since it has at least returned three days in a
row to the feeders, I'm alerting those who'd like to see it to come on
down to 6603 Catherine Street in Norfolk. You're welcome to look even
if we're not home. If we are, it's a lot more comfortable viewing from
inside the house, so please ring the bell. It most commonly visits the
large feeder on the west side of the house.
As an added inducement our Orange-crowned
Warbler is still coming to the suet on the green feeder on the south side of
the
house. Sunday it was quite regular in its appearances. But I didn't
see it yesterday, and today I saw it only once. In past years it has
become less regular toward the end of January. But then with birdwatching
you take your chances, don't you?
Cheers,
Bob
