Non-birding spouse and I took long drive today to visit Burke's Garden in
Tazewell County. This was our first trip to this truly unique part of
Virginia. Best bird of the day was a light morphed (moderately marked
type) Rough-legged Hawk located atop bare tree in front of cluster of
evergreens at least 200 yards from road directly in front of the Burke's
Garden School on Rt. 623.
From the distance, viewing from the road without binoculars, this bird had
a lot on the head. Field marks for this bird included white forehead,
mottled bib and broad white necklace on upper belly and dark blackish
belly. When fanning the "white" tail while perched and in flight, I
observed a single, wide blackish subterminal band.
Also in this area, in far back harvested field to right of bare tree, was a
small mix flock of American Pipit, Killdeer and Horned Lark.
