Hello Va. Birders!
This morning 9 hardy No.VA. Bird Club members braved temps in the
30's and below-freezing wind chills, and were rewarded with outstanding
looks at a subadult rough-legged hawk wheeling over our heads before he
continued his journey north. I soon learned that this was a first for
the park!
And that started the raptor avalanche -- at one point there were
so many birds in the air that we had trouble getting them all I.D.ed
before they got too far away. I had three hawks in my binocs at one
time.
But it wasn't just about birds of prey. Along with the usual
hoodies and green-winged teal were also blue-winged teal, American
widgeon and a flashy pair of wood ducks. A winter wren and a couple of
rusty blackbirds helped round out the special passerines. The rusties,
strangely enough, were feeder birds.
The rest of the list follows. I have put an F after the birds
seen at the feeder by the visitor's center.
