VA Birders,
Roger and Lynda left before daylight this morning to attend the hawk
watch
at the Mendota, VA so I told Roger I would stop by his yard this morning to
see what migrants might be moving through. I birded the yard for only 30
minutes from 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. but still managed to pick up 27 species.
Scarlet Tanagers were the most common of the migrants with over 10 of this
species moving around the yard. Three Swainson's Thrushes hopped around in
a locust tree for a couple minutes and I also heard at least two Wood
Thrushes from the woods behind the house. A couple of Ruby-throated Hummers
were still working the feeders. The warblers were just getting started as
the first rays of sun were hitting the walnut trees in his backyard and I
noted a Tennessee, Cape May, Chestnut-sided, and Palm before heading to
work. At least five Eastern Bluebirds were in the yard as well as a
Rose-breasted Grosbeak. Also seen were the Northern Flicker, Downey WP, and
Red-bellied WP. I'd say the detour was certainly worth the extra hour.
Good Birding,
