Remembering Ned Brinkley's recent posting about storm-driven birds inland, I
decided--since it was still raining this morning--to swing around some of the
lakes near my home just southeast of Harrisonburg. Far from depressing the
bird life, if anything the rain made them more active. Some of the birds I
posted last week were still around. The main addition was the flock of 9
Red-breasted Mergansers--all female--that graced Lake Shenandoah. I found:
at Lake Shenandoah:
Canada Goose 4
Red-breasted Merganser 9
American Coot 16
Ring-billed Gull 3
Swallow flock of 50+: Tree Swallow only
Cedar Waxwing 20 flying over golf course nearby
Eastern Meadowlark 1
at Lake Campbell (beside the resident tame Mute Swans):
Canada Goose 4
Blue-winged Teal 1 male
Belted Kingfisher 1 female
Tree Swallow 1
at Leonard's Pond:
Mallard 1 pair
Blue-winged Teal 3 males
Lesser Yellowlegs 1
Wilson's Snipe 3
Eastern Phoebe 2
Barn Swallow 1
American Pipit 1
Savannah Sparrow 2
