I'm happy to report our 26th season of counting migrating raptors at
Rockfish Gap Hawk Watch will begin on August 15 and will run through
November 24. The watch is run daily, weather permitting and availability
of volunteers, and is supported by three area bird clubs Augusta,
Monticello and Rockingham Bird Clubs.
Data collected will be submitted on a regular basis to Hawk Migration
Association of North America's HAWKCOUNT Raptor's Online and can be viewed
by accessing their web site by going to www.hmana.org and clicking on the
HAWKCOUNT Raptors banner. We also plan to have the daily summaries posted
to VA-Bird.
Located on the southern side of Rockfish Gap in the Blue Ridge Mountains,
Rockfish Gap Hawk Watch is held on the grounds of the Inn at Afton just
above where I-64 (exit 99) intersects with the southern end of the Skyline
Drive and the northern end of the Blue Ridge Parkway, just east of
Waynesboro, VA and approximately 22 miles west of Charlottesville, VA.
Rockfish Gap Hawk Watch needs YOU! We are actively recruiting volunteer
counters. A training session for individuals who sign up as counters will
be scheduled the first Saturday in September to be held at the hawk watch
