Rockfish Gap Hawk Watch is currently seeking volunteers to assist in
identifying and counting migrating raptors for the Fall 2002 season. The
watch is held on the grounds of The Inn at Afton overlooking Rockfish Gap
where Interstate 64 intersects with the Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline
Drive. Less than five miles from Waynesboro, Rockfish Gap is approximately
22 miles west of Charlottesville, VA and 18 miles east of I-81. Visitors
take I-64 exit 99, turn right onto Route 250 East, go 1/10th mile under
overpass and take first right onto Afton Circle. Follow up and around to
The Inn at Afton and park in the outer areas. The observation site is held
on the back patio.
This fall we will be offering two two-hour introductory sessions to be held
at the site on Saturday, September 7 and Saturday, September 24 from 9 - 11
a.m. The first hour will include a Power Point presentation. The second
hour will be devoted to hawk watching and additional hawk identification
tips. Participants will be required to sign up as a co-counter that can
involve as little as one day, working alongside more experienced hawk
watchers. Good binoculars are essential and participants should also bring
a chair, hat and sunscreen. Although not required, a scope is very
useful. Restroom facilities are available inside The Inn. There is also a
restaurant inside that offers a panoramic view.
Our 26th season is currently underway and will run through the weekend
before Thanksgiving. Come experience the annual fall migration along the
Blue Ridge in Virginia.
