Rockfish Gap Hawk Watch - Fall 2004 Season
Our 28th season officially opened Friday, August 13 with seasoned hawk
watcher Bill Gallagher at the helm. Bill is the founding father of Wild Cat
Ridge Hawk Watch, NJ and we are very excited he and his wife, Sandy, have
recently relocated to our area. Thankfully Bill is NOT retired from hawk
watching! We welcome them to Rockfish Gap Hawk Watch!
For several days leading up to opening day Bill reported seeing several
migrating hawks over our area. Such was not the case on Friday the 13th.
Then on our second day of the season, with the advance of hurricane Charley
as it tracked NE after barrelling across Florida, the rain arrived by 11:30
a.m. shutting us down. Third day was the charm with lots of sunshine and
backdrop of clouds. We tallied 50 for the day that included 41 Broad-winged
Hawks.
Coverage results will be submitted on a regular basis to Hawk Migration
Association of North America's (HMANA) HawkCount database throughout the
fall migration season and email updates will be sent to BirdHawk, VA-Bird
and Shenvalbirds listserves, providing up-to-date results. Data for
Rockfish Gap Hawk Watch as well as data from all other participating hawk
watch sites is available by going to www.hawkcount.org.
The Rockfish Gap Hawk Watch now provides easy access to annual narrative
and stat reports that can be downloaded from our web site. The final
reports for 2001 and 2002 as well as summary stats for 2003 are now
available for download to your computer or printer.
With paper prices skyrocketing in recent years, duplicating costs have
increased substantially and putting them in electronic form was the
solution in order for us to continue providing copies of the annual reports
to our volunteers and visitors Several of our volunteers and friends of the
hawk watch do not have computers and they will be receiving a mailed copy.
In addition to the annual reports, the Volunteer Sign-up Sheets are on the
web and are updated on a regular basis. However, In order to update the
sign-up sheets we need volunteer counters!!!!. There are many open slots.
Please review the available slots and sign up by clicking the button to
send us email sign-up.
The web site has been updated with a new look and incorporates many added
features. Check it out at
