A mid-afternoon walk along the Potomac from the Riverbend Visitors' Center
south to the dam at the border of Great Falls NP, produced the following duck
sightings:
475 Ringed-neck Ducks (95% male)
16 Common Mergansers (2 m, 14 f)
13 Lessor Scaup (7 m, 6 f)
12 Bufflehead (8 m, 4f)
9 Mallards (one floating belly up--possibly the victim of a hunter's
bullet?)
1 Ruddy Duck
The river was high with a fairly swift current. An adult Bald Eagle was on
its usual high perch across the river just north of the boat ramp.
