Hello VA-Birders:
About 6:45 this evening at Riverbend Park (Fairfax County) I saw a female
Common Merganser on the Potomac with (as best I could count) 17 ducklings.
They were about a half mile upstream from the visitor center in a part of
the river that is filled with rocks and small islands. I had my Minolta 10X
digital camera with me and took some photos of the family while swimming and
then settled on a rock. I counted the ducklings as they were swimming, but
they were moving at the speed of light and were, of course, usually in a
tight cluster, so I relied on the photos to try to confirm my count.
These ducklings are very cute, well worth a trip to Riverbend!
