My wife and I stopped by Bill's pond off Rte. 221 in Bedford Co. around 4:00
PM today to check for anything unusual. There were fortysome Canada Geese on
the water. After a few minutes it seemed like the sky opened up and 100+
Ring-billed Gulls landed on the pond. The first thing they did was to immerse
their
heads under water and splash around as if taking a bath. While this was going
on all the geese left the water and grouped around our vehicle. When the gulls
finished bathing they came on shore and began to preen. About 4:00 PM the
gulls all took off at once, caught a thermal that took them up to the limits of
naked eye view and streamed off in a southwest direction. Reminded us of the
fall Broad-winged migration. Very entertaining and interesting to see.
