Yesterday walking dirt roads near my house (Lincoln, near Purcellville) I heard
a Ring-necked Pheasant call. I last saw one in the area 10-15 years ago, and
haven't heard any since. I know its call well from seeing them elsewhere in
the last year, and I had just listened to it on bird tape yesterday. They have
been heard/seen at Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve, about 15 miles from here. I
learned from the Va Bluebook that Loudoun Co. has an introduced population (or
individual/s) so it's not as rare here as elsewhere in Virginia.
Other birds of interest seen in my local ramblings in the last 3 days include
the return of Eastern Kingbird, House Wren, Catbird, Yellowthroat, and Yellow
Warbler here, and an Ovenbird near Banshee Reeks. Also, a roost of 55+
Vultures that were all of the Black persuasion and a flock of as many Cedar
Waxwings. I hear the Wild Turkey wooing his mate every morning, but he always
manages to stay "over the next ridge"!
