On another Richmond birding note, I birded the boardwalk/"Citie of Henricus"
portion of Dutch Gap/Henricus East of Chester, S of Richmond, on the morning
of Jan. 11th. 0915-1130, 17 degrees up to 32 upon arrival home, front
entrance frozen, thus no ducks. A banner day for bald eagles:
Bald Eagle: 14 birds. (9 imm., 5 adult) observed overlooking the confluence
of the James River and the horshoe branch of Dutch Gap. Most were perched
across the river, easily visible in the trees through scope. One flew up
the cliffside and perched in a tree in which I happened to be viewing a C.
Wren through binocs, about 40 feet away. Fantastic view of what appeared to
be a 2nd year bird -- looking right at me with penetrating eyes. Quite a
treat, really.
Broad-winged hawk: 1 (light juvenile)
Carolina Wren
White-Throated sparrow
Song Sparrow
Yellow-Rumped Warbler
Ruby-Crowned Kinglet
Slate colored Junco (dark eyed...)
Tufted Titmouse
C. Chickadee
Am. Crow
Northern Flicker
Hairy Woodpecker
Downy Woodpecker
Red-bellied Woodpecker
Double-crested Cormorant
Canada Goose
Ring-billed gulls
Laughing Gull (just one!)
Herring Gull
Great Blue Heron
