VA-Birders,
As many of you know, Saturday is the Fort Belvoir Christmas Bird Count. It is
shaping up well here in the 9th inning, but we could still use some assistance.
Specifically, for those of you who live in the count circle (roughly a 15-mile
radius around Newington, VA) with seed AND/OR Hummingbird feeders, your help is
appreciated and potentially very important. Often times the more
difficult-to-find birds show up at feeders and can easily be observed. If
anyone would like to participate in the count, please contact me and I'll give
you the necessary information. It's really not more than keeping an extra eye
on your feeders for a day.
**To those who maintain Hummingbird feeders and are playing host to a lingering
hummer of any type (Selasphorus or otherwise), please contact me and rest
assured that the location of your home will be kept strictly confidential if
you prefer. We would like to be sure to get a hummer on the count, as we were
able to do last year with the Rufous Hummingbird, and in other recent years.
Also, we can always use more participants to help in the field. If your
schedule is suddenly clear and you have some time to spare on Saturday, please
volunteer. These counts are arguably the most critical events in capturing an
annual snapshot of avian population trends. If there are others that you know
who do not read the listserv, please contact them and see if they have an
interest.
Thanks!
Jay Keller
