[va-bird] Re: Remington Uppies:NOT

Gerry & VA Birders,

Bill Cross and I spent a total of about 2 hours this morning looking for
the Uppies (Upland Sandpipers for anyone not familiar with their nickname) at
the turf farm just outside Remington in Fauquier Co. (I think it's
Fauquier--Todd, correct me if I am wrong) without success. We stayed for
some time after Gerry Weinberger & Co. left, and we walked the fence line of
the military facility across the street, also without success. Happily, we
did not encounter any suspicious military personnel!

Our best birds of the morning were probably 2 Grasshopper Sparrows which
perched on the fence across from the turf farm (on the side road into that
area). One appeared to be a juvenile with a streaked upper breast. We also
had a glimpse of about half a dozen birds which I am pretty sure were Horned
Larks, but we were not able to get a good look at them as the light was not
good. We also enjoyed seeing all the Meadowlarks. The area of the turf farm
near the main road had a crop of winter wheat (Bill identified it and I take
his word for it) which had recently been cut, and it was amazing how easily
birds could vanish into it--the furrows are apparently much deeper than we
realized--but alas, no Uppies appeared there either.

I do hope others will continue to look for them. Please let us know
whether you find them or not. Thanks.
