It appears that the pair of red-shouldered hawks that have bred here for at
least the past 2 years are back. They nested last year in a large oak in the
300 block of North Edgewood Street. On Friday one of them was swooping around
the neighborhood and I spotted it perched on top of a parked car. With a
spotting scope from our house we could see the nestlings' heads peaking out
above the nest last spring. No nestlings visible this year as of yet.
Also, last week we had a red-tailed hawk land in on of our oaks and tear apart
a squirrel's nest and fly off with a baby squirrel in it's talons. My kids
were in awe! As of yesterday, the squirrels were back and actively attending
the nest and it is now bigger than ever.
