On Sunday I was doing a feeder count for Project Wildbird, when I looked out
the window to see a Red-shouldered Hawk sitting just outside the window on one
of our bluebird boxes. It was having a hard time hanging on with the wind gusts
getting rather strong. The hawk sat there for a couple of minutes then saw some
movement at the mouth of a chipmunk hole just below it on the ground. It then
dropped down into the yard, peered inside the hole, then attempted to reach
into the hole to get the chipmunk. It tried two or three times, then finally
gave up. Once It nearly got knocked over by a wind gust while it had one leg
down in the hole.
