VA BIRDers,
4 Red-necked Grebes on Burke Lake near noon today.
Besides the hundreds of human visitors, there were 2 Wood Ducks, ca. 190
Lesser Scaup, 30 Ring-necked Ducks, 15 Red-breasted Mergansers, a Common
Merganser, a Ruddy Duck, 6 Pied-billed Grebes, 2 Horned Grebes, 30 DC
Cormorants, and some errant Mallards and Canada Geese plus a few Ring-billed
Gulls and an over flying Bald Eagle.
With the current reports, it looks like we have at least a well-above
average Red-necked Grebe season in Northern Virginia. I would not be
surprised if a few more "Rangers" were lurking out in the deeper ponds in
the piedmont and along the Potomac. And who knows, maybe an Eared will
drop by?
