VA Birders,
Much to my surprise, after I had been at Roaches Run, across the G.W.
Pkwy. from National Airport in Arlington Co., for at least half an hour this
morning, all of a sudden, as I was taking one last scan of the pond, a
Red-necked Grebe appeared in my scope. He or she was beginning to come into
breeding plumage, with some red on the neck. Before finding this grebe (a
little later I found a Pied-billed Grebe as well), I had been watching
Caspian Terns flying gracefully around the pond (I counted 6 of them), and a
pair of Black-crowned Night-Herons standing on the opposite shore and then
sitting side by side on a bare branch just above the water. I also spotted
an immature bird for a total of 3 night-herons. An Osprey and 4 Tree
Swallows were also noteworthy.
