VA-Birders,
Thanks to Rob Hilton, who left a message while I was out enjoying our
NVBC trip to Sky Meadows State Park yesterday (Saturday, Mar. 15), I went
down to Roaches Run (to the big pond) late yesterday afternoon, shortly
before sunset, and saw the Red-necked Grebe which Rob had seen there
yesterday morning. It was keeping company with a male Red-breasted
Merganser, the only duck I saw on the pond. I also saw a Black-crowned
Night-Heron, which came out on a limb just before I left--but I'm afraid
he/she was going to have to wait a long time before doing any fishing, as the
tide was extremely high--practically at flood stage!
A historical note: Checking my records, I recorded my first Red-necked
Grebe in Virginia at Roaches Run on Oct. 28, 1974--and I'm not sure that I
have seen another one there until yesterday.
While I'm posting this report, I should also mention that on Friday, Mar.
14, we went to Dulles Airport Pond to look for the Canvasbacks which had been
reported there earlier. We did not find them, but we did find another
Red-necked Grebe, as well as 2 Greater Scaup, 2 pairs of Redheads, and lots
of Ring-necked and Ruddy Ducks on that pond, and a single Cedar Waxwing at
the edge of the parking lot, which was my first waxwing of the year.
