VA BIRDers,
A Red-necked Grebe in basic plumage was floating about 100 yds off the picnic
area of Dyke Marsh (Hunting Creek Bay) early this afternoon. I also noted 6
Horned Grebes in this same general area; a Pied-billed Grebe was in Hunting
Creek near the Stone Bridge. Of the waterfowl populating Hunting Creek Bay
and extending south of the marina I noted about 307 Common Mergansers, 22
Red-breasted Mergansers (one was a female) and 4 Hooded Mergansers.
Also, there was an Osprey on a nest platform in Belmont Bay today, Prince
William Co side. The platform is most easily viewable from the new Belmont
Bay marina.
Lastly, while waiting for a Barred Owl to hoot at the Huntley Meadows parking
lot (Fairfax Co) this evening, I noted 2 small bats flying about.
