South Holston Lake / Musick's Campground
According to Wallace Coffey, this is called a "DOUBLE QUADRUPLE"!
Don Holt and I made a late afternoon run out to South Holston Lake
(Musick's Campground). "Four" grebe species were present (first in
Tennessee, then in Virginia).
Red-breasted Merganser (2)
Pied-billed Grebe (12+)
Horned Grebe (5)
RED-NECKED GREBE (1)
Eared Grebe (8)
Bonaparte's Gull (3)
Ring-billed Gull (200+)
The Red-necked Grebe was first observed on the Tennessee side of the lake
area, in association with the Eared Grebes and a couple of Horned Grebes.
In a short time, the group drifted across the Virginia line and was soon
joined by the Pied-billed Grebes (also from the Tennessee side). Four in
Tennessee became four in Virginia.
Wallace arrived (just as the light was fading) to see the birds in Virginia.
