For those not lucky enough to have Red-headed Woodpeckers
coming to their feeder, there is one place in Northern Virginia
where you have a very good chance of seeing them. Yesterday,
while leading a 4th grade class from Langley School on a nature
walk at Huntley Meadows, I saw 2. They were in their usual
haunts, a grove of dead trees near the newest beaver lodge.
This location can be reached by going down an "informal" trail
past the tower. Huntley Meadows is south of the beltway, off
Route 1 and Lockheed Ave.
