Today I finally saw a Red-headed Woodpecker in an area near my house three
miles east of Whitehall in Albemarle County. I have been watching this area
for years because it is the ideal habitat for Red-headed Woodpeckers. It is a
grove of tall mature oaks with a clear understory and several big snags. The
woodpecker was high in the trees. Part of the time it was flying out almost
flycatcher-like and returning to the same area in the tree. I don't know if it
was catching insects or not. Anyway I had great views. The area is at a
pull-off at Midway Farm on Garth Road about a half mile west of the bridge
crossing Mechums River.
