Slow day at Great Falls - where were all the birds?
Variety was just OK, numbers way down from what I
would expect here in late April. I've had some really
good birding in No. Va. during 4 of the past 4 days so
today was quite a contrast.
Best birds were 6 female RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS in
Difficult Run, swimming toward the Potomac. When I
left them they had stopped to preen at the stream's
mouth. At first I didn't see them well because the
trees were in between the birds and I, I assumed they
were part of the Common Merg population that has been
breeding in the area over the past couple of summers.
But with a close unobstructed view they had all the
field marks of Red-breasted. I think that
Red-breasted Mergs are the least likely of the 3 merg
sp. to be seen this far up the Potomac.
It was a pleasant day to be outdoors. Hope everyone
in No. Va. was able to enjoy the nice weather.
