Hi VA birders ,
The cold snap is concentrating waterfowl on Beaverdam Reservoir which is
still around two thirds ice free. Highlight this afternoon was an adult
Red-throated Loon which is an unusual sighting in the Piedmont in winter ,
perhaps a refugee from the Great Lakes freeze up. Other waterfowl noted
included Am
Widgeon , Ring necked Duck ( 6 ) , Bufflehead , Hooded Merganser ( 12 ) ,
Common Merganser ( 25 ) , Pied-billed Grebe (2 ) , Mallard ( 50 + ) and Canada
Goose ( 150 + ).
At Riverside Park , Loudoun County I relocated the Orange-crowned Warbler
first seen here in December by Andy Rabin on the Seneca CBC. Plumage
indicates that it is probably a first year female. The warbler is associating
itself
with a flock of White-throated Sparrows along the river bank keeping very low
to the ground concealed in dead vegetation. As the bird did not make any
type of call or respond to pishing this is not an easy bird to find .
