VA-Birders!
I guess those Red-Headed Woodpeckers are proliferating. In Ft. Hunt
Park, when photographing an apparent Cooper's Hawk, I noticed a woodpecker that
landed on a branch not far from the hawk. The woodpecker was close enough that
the hawk cranked its head around to watch the woodpecker over his shoulder.
I drove around the far end of the loop and met Mary Carroll Potter, who
pointed out a juvenile Red-Headed Woodpecker that she had spotted.
Later, when processing my photos of the hawk at home, I discovered that
the woodpecker that I had seen was also a juvenile Red-Headed.
About the Cooper's, if anyone wants to help confirm it, I could send a
photo or two.
