In the far eastern part of Fairfax County, I checked the little park area off
the Mt. Vernon Parkway, near Waynewood Blvd, for the Red-Headed Woodpecker, and
it's still there--plus some other woodpeckers:
-Red-Headed
-Pileated
-Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker
-Downy
-Red-Bellied
This is an 8 or 10 acre area with old-growth trees that have been there at
least since the construction of the Parkway in 1936, and there is a lot of
standing deadwood--perfect for woodpeckers.
