[va-bird] Re: Red tail hawk chicks

Betsy,

I was about to respond and say I didn't have any current info on the chicks that were rescued at Fort Ward Park in Alexandria, but just today I heard from Kent Knowles of The Raptor Conservancy that they are doing very well, and have grown quite big. He said: "They were recently placed in a flight cage to start learning to use those wings of theirs. They got a slow start in life, but should be ready for release in a few weeks. I doubt either of them would have lived without the assistance and concern of yourself and others. I can't tell you a release date yet (it depends on how fast they get into condition)..."

What looks like another success story with no invention needed from humans whatsoever is that of the Mississippi Kite nest in the Riverside Gardens subdivison in southeastern Fairfax County. A single fledgling from a nest there is the offspring of the adults who have been seen soaring above nearby Waynewood. The nest is in a tree in someone's yard on a residential street. Digiscoped photos of the kites can be seen at http://www.pbase.com/paulasullivan/miki
