went out to Rectorstown to see if I could find a Short-Eared Owl or 3.
ran in to Scott Trimble at the field, just as the SEOW made a first
appearance. there was also a beautiful very thick-furred vixen fox far
out in the field hunting. she spent a long time standing over one spot,
& finally pounced. she then tossed her prey in the air, which attracted
the attention of the SEOW, who clearly had been watching this affair
even while continuing to hunt. the SEOW came over & to sort of hover,
and at one point drop as tho to snatch the prey (from a hundred plus
yards at dusk could not see clearly, but it appeared too large to be a
vole, and even appeared to have a bushy tail, tho several hundred yards
from the nearest squirrel size trees. the fox proceeded to hunt down
the length of the field, also scent marking at least once. the SEOW
also continued to hunt, until we decided that the mid-20s temps, strong
wind, & deepening dusk meant it was time for us to go.
