A Razorbill was observed diving close to the rocks on the 3rd island of the
CBBT around 4pm Friday afternoon. It's possibly the same bird that started off
the new year in that area. It spent a lot of time under water, but afforded
close views when it popped up. There were many more scoters present today than
there were a couple of weeks ago, but not rivaling the numbers last year. I
estimate about 5000 Surfs and 500 Blacks to go with 250 Long-tailed Ducks (the
most I've seen in several years), 300 Lesser Scaup, 25 Bufflehead, 25
Red-breasted Mergansers. On the gull front Ring-billed Gulls were most
numerous with about 5000, Herring 1000, Great Black-backed 150, Lesser
Black-backed 2, Bonaparte's 500 (a good omen if you're looking for Sabine's,
Little, Black-headed, Ross's). Other birds included only a handful (that's
six) Great Cormorants being significantly outnumbered by the Double-crested
there, 10 Oystercatchers, 4 Common Loons, 1 Gannet, many Turnstones but no
Purple Sandpipers seen (but not seriously sought). It was cold, but sunny in
preparation for the uncertain weather of the next 24 hours.
Cheers,
Bob
