(None of these birds are new to the listserv this
year---I just always wanted to write a subject heading
like that! You know, one that I would be jealous of
when someone else wrote it!)
It was a wonderful day to be out birding the CBBT and
the Eastern Shore. As reported by Bev, the CBBT
islands were hoppin'! I was hoping for a white-winged
gull but had to "settle" for Red-necked Grebe and
Razorbill courtesy of Larry Lynch, Lauren and Bev;
other highlights included five Harlequins, all three
Scoters, both Scaup, Lesser Black-backed Gull, the
usual Rockpipers, and strangely, a resting flock of
Cowbirds. As I drove from Island 4 towards Fisherman's
Island I glimpsed a Western or Clark's Grebe close to
the bridge; it dove and there was no way I could ID it
going 55. Okay, 60...or 62...
At the back pond of ESVNWR, I was treated to a young,
streaky Goshawk "flap flap gliding" overhead; it
circled around a few times to make sure I didn't write
it off as a Coopers.
I spent the last hour or two of the afternoon at Ned's
place staking out his Wilson's Warbler. It figures--I
sat on the porch for about an hour with no warbler
(although his Ruby-throated Hummingbird made several
appearances). Ned came home, I turned around to say
hello, and then the warbler appeared. Ned is magic!
Afterwards I checked the pond on Washington on Ned's
advice, and found a Cackling Goose with the Canadas,
and two male Redheads. I ended the day watching a few
dozen Woodcocks flying into the fields at the refuge,
listening to two Great Horned Owls, and watching a
breathtaking sunset.
Can't beat it!
