Ravens are not too unusual in the Lynchburg area; since the early 1970's we
have rarely missed them on either our CBC or a breeding bird count we do in
June covering the same count circle. On these two counts we usually record
from one or two up to 10-13. They are most often encountered either north
and east of town along the James River, which would include the landfill, or
south of town, where they apparently nest at a quarry. On June 11 this year
I also heard one on my BBS route in southern Campbell Co., south of
Lynchburg, near the Roanoke River, and two summers ago in late May and in
June I encountered them on four separate occasions in Appomattox and western
Buckingham County, east of Lynchburg, in the general vicinity of Holiday
Lake State Park; on one of these occasions, May 27, there were five
individuals together at a road kill, which might suggest a family group. I
was surprised at their occurrence this far east, but the Bluebook indicates
that breeding has been recorded in Appomattox, Buckingham, Fluvanna, and
even Goochland Counties.
Can anyone clarify in what area of northern Virginia the raven nest reported
last summer on a tower was, and what the easternmost records in that area
are? The atlas shows them through Rappahannock County, with an isolated
record in northeastern Fauquier County, probably in the Bull Run Mountains
near The Plains. It also states that they have even occasionally nested on
the Coastal Plain. Does anyone know if this is true, and if so the details?
The Bluebook does not note any Coastal Plains nestings, and I could not find
any records of such in The Raven, although I did not comb the Foray reports.

Yesterday, while traveling east on 460, I looked in at the Lynchburg

area briefly (at about one in the afternoon) and noted two Common Ravens
soaring over the spot. I'm embarrassed to say that I don't even know
