Today at 2:00 PM, Donna and I saw 3 Common Ravens milling about (soaring
and flapping) quite low over the Dulles Access Road next to the Dulles
Airport Pond. Also, with 3-4 1st winter Bonaparte's was a bird that
looked quite different. Possible 1st winter Little Gull?? I've been
through all the books and still can't figure it out. It had all the
right field marks, but unfortunately I didn't think to compare it's size
with the Bone's. Grrrrrrrrr I have to go to work tomorrow, but if
anybody's going out there, I sure could use some help with the ID.
Earlier, we dipped on the Red-throated Loon at Beaverdam, but still saw
some good birds (ok,ok, they're all good birds). Another birder had
counted 7 Red-necked Grebes and was still counting when we left. We then
headed over to the Dulles Wetlands (DGWMP) and saw most of the birds
reported by Glenn Koppel yesterday. The highlights of the day follow:
Osprey, 2 @ BD
Pied-billed Grebe, BD
Horned Grebe, BD
Red-necked Grebe, BD
American Wigeon, DW
Gadwall, DW
Green-winged Teal, DW
Mallard, DP
American Black Duck, DW
Ring-necked Duck, DP
Lesser Scaup, DW & DP
Bufflehead, BD & DW
Hooded Merganser, DW & DP
Red-breasted Merganser, BD
Common Merganser, BD
Ruddy Duck, BD & DP
American Coot, DP
Common Snipe, 6-8 @ DW
Bonaparte's Gull, DP
Common Raven, 3 @ DP
Sorry I wasn't able to post this sooner.
