Hello VAbirders,
Beautiful rain, eh?
Here in our garden the earthworms have migrated near to the surface of the
soil. That piece of information has not gone unnoticed by the Robins in
these parts. Robin whinnies and songs fill the air.
One particular Robin has found a choice location in our garden where
earthworms seem in abundance. For 2 days I've watched him pull out worm
after worm from the good earth. Like a bear just emerged from hibernation,
his appetite seems insatiable. He knows a good spot when he see it. Our
yard is rich in earthworms because I mulch about 2/3 of it with leaf
mulch. My yard is the only one in the neighborhood that is leaf-mulch
brown instead of grass green, but so far no one has complained. And the
Robins, well, they sing its praises as they gobble down those tasty fat worms.
Leaf mulch = earthworms = Robins = a happy me.
