I have been away from email and so am late posting these sightings. My
apologies.
At home in Gloucester:
Our first BLUEBIRD brood fledged and disappeared into the trees on
Wednesday (4/26) morning/afternoon. They were gone by the time we got home
from work, so we never saw the young ones out and about. All four eggs in
the clutch hatched and made it through this year. Hopefully our mealworm
supplements made them strong.
On Wednesday, we saw a pair of BLUE GROSBEAKS down the road from our house
where a pair spent the summer last year. A PHOEBE, a couple N. PARULAS,
OVENBIRDS, BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLERS, and PINE WARBLERS, a RED-EYED VIREO,
and a remaining lone WHITE-THROATED SPARROW are singing all the time now. I
heard a lone CATBIRD on Thursday morning "meewing" in the trees as well.
On the Eastern Shore Thursday:
A lone SAVANNAH SPARROW was in the marsh/field near a private boat ramp we
used on Cherrystone Creek. It was rather odd, in that all the non-brown
areas on the face and top of the head were a rather bright yellow wash -
much more so than any I have seen before. It took me off guard and I tried
to make it into something else for a few minutes. In a pond near the ramp
there was an appropriately single SOLITARY SANDPIPER. YELLOWLEGS were
common both at Cherrystone Creek and at Oyster, and all the ones I heard
were GREATERS.
Other notable birds at Oyster were ORCHARD ORIOLE, a COMMON LOON, a
WHIMBREL, a SWAMP SPARROW, and a couple BALD EAGLES.
I had not checked email often enough to know about the S-T Flycatcher,
unfortunately.
