I arrived at Huntley Meadows at 8:00 this morning and was told by others
that the Black Rail had been heard calling from the center of the loop
between 6:30 and 8:00. Not until 10:35 did I hear it call. From the center
of the loop I heard six loud and clear repetitions of its three-note
"Kikidoo." In addition to the "usual suspects," Green Heron, Great Blue
Heron, Great Egret, Red-wingeds, etc, I had an Eastern Wood-Pewee at the
beginning of the boardwalk, a single Black Duck just west of the raised
platform on the loop, a Ruby-throated Hummer in the bare tree behind the
observation tower, and I heard a Barred Owl duet as I walked back toward the
visitor's center.
