I had a Ruby-throated Hummingbird in the yard this morning. Actually, my
non-birding spouse first observed it! I believe it was a juvenile, but
could have been a female. She was flitting around in the garden drinking
from the red, trumpet-shaped flowers of the hummingbird vine. The vine has
climbed up the hummer feeder pole and continues up a grape vine that is
dangling down from a Cedar tree above. The bird went from flower to flower
but did not drink from the feeder, making me think it is a juvenile. She was
a plumb little bird (like a jumbo shrimp). She had green back, white
throat and white in the tail. I did not see her this evening when I got
home.
I also had a pair of Common Yellow-throats in the garden this morning with
four Towhees and a Thrasher. I have been noticing that as the gardens expand
and mature more good birds are attracted to the flowers and bushes, than any
of the feeders! There were also four Chipping Sparrows.
