[va-bird] R-N Grebe, Bonaparte's Gull at Riverbend Pk

A brief walk south of the Visitors' center this Monday afternoon (3/26/07)  
produced a RED-NECKED GREBE (probably one of the two I first reported on  March 
13) and a sole BONAPARTE'S GULL, both still in winter plumage.
 
The water level at Riverbend and Great Falls Parks remains high and swift.  
Part of the reason I hear is that a dam on the West Virginia/Maryland border 
has  been releasing surplus water for the past week.  As a result the river  is 
deep and swift, and waterfowl is sparse, mainly sticking to the  shorelines. 
However I did observe small numbers of MALLARDS,  RING-NECKED DUCKS, 
BUFFLEHEADS, and COMMON MERGANSERS today.
 
Back home, I'm trying to discourage a Pileated Woodpecker from using my  
cedar siding as a sounding board.
