I surveyed Amelia WMA (VBWT site # PHP01) for the Great Backyard Bird Count
this morning. Highlights were 3 male REDHEADS (unusual this far inland).
For those interested in looking for the REDHEADS, they were first seen
around 8:45 from the trail across the Amelia Lake Dam. To reach the dam,
follow
the road in from the main entrance and take the road to the right that is
signed for the shooting ranges. There is a pine tree down across this road,
probably a casualty of the recent ice event, since it wasn't there a month
ago.
However it is safe to drive around it on the grass. Drive past the shooting
ranges to the end of the road and park at the Amelia Dam parking area. Walk
out on to the dam and look out over the open water.
Around 10 AM they flew up the lake, circled a couple of times, and landed in
the open water across from the public boat landing. To get to this
location, from the main entrance keep to left all the way to the end of the
road.
