Today I decided to check out Paula Sullivan's report of the Ft. Ward
goodies she had reported. At about 2:00 p.m. (Paula said she saw them at
l:00 p.m.) I arrived there wondering where to start. No problem.
Immediately, my "guide", Paul Kane pulled up and offered to show me the
hot spots of the park. I was amazed, first at all the great habitat, and
then at the size (56 acres), but, most of all, at the number of great
birds. In about 10 minutes in one spot, we saw 3 red-breasted nuthatches,
several pine warblers, some of which were down close and personal, a
brown creeper, and some kinglets (heard), not to mention the many juncos
and a hairy woodpecker. What a gem and right within earshot of I-395!
