I too had a Rose-breasted Grosbeak (male) at my feeder on Saturday.
First time for my yard, possibly because I usually stop feeding by this
time of year. I've kept up the feeding because the Purple Finches are
still coming back every day for more sunflower seeds. I also had a
dozen White-throated Sparrows in fine breeding plumage pass through the
yard on Saturday. I had none in the yard this winter, and the wintering
Junco flock which was up to 50 individuals as recently as last week is
now finally departed.
At lunch today, a colleague mentioned seeing a dead bird on the plaza in
front of our office tower (Gallows Road, Fairfax). We went out to look
at it and it was a male Indigo Bunting. My guess is that it struck the
tower last night during the poor weather. Since most of the area around
our building is densely planted, I'm led to wonder how many birds die
under similar circumstances and go unnoticed.
