A quick glance at my safflower feeder on reaching my study a few moments ago
was all that was really needed to see I had my first Purple Finch in the
garden in donkey's years. A really bright male, confirmed in all the details
through binos.
Threw me back 30 years, when the common winter birds at the same feeders were
Purple Finches and Evening Grosbeaks, with nary a House Finch in sight!
Garden is in suburban Annandale, Fairfax County.
