Hi all,
I just got an email from Chris Elliott of Mineral who believes he had a WESTERN
GREBE at Pleasant's Point/Landing area of Lake Anna. This area is between dike
3 and the main dam. To reach the area, take Rt 652 from Rt 208 for about 7
miles then turn left on Rt 622 and continue for about 4 mile at which point the
road crosses dike 3. There is a public boat landing at the far end of the
dike. To get to Pleasant's, continue on 622 to the t-intersection and turn
left on Rt 701. Continue to Pleasant's Landing which will be on the left just
before you reach the intersection with Rt 601.
Here is the description from Chris: "This evening, shortly before dusk, we
were watching a Common Loon from Pleasant's Landing, when we spotted what
appeared to us to be a Western Grebe. It looked to be a black grebe and had a
sharply delineated long white neck. The black on the head extended through the
eye area as in the Sibley and other guides we consulted. It dove and swam from
the right side of the entry road around the point and off towards Dike 3. "
Good Birding,
