[va-bird] Prince William County MIKI

Report for Saturday, May 29, 2004 -

With the promise of clearing skies, friend Gordy Adamski and my non-birding
spouse, Keith, and I along with Marty the Jack Russell, departed before
sunrise with hopes of observing and photographing the Prince William County
MIKI reported by Jim Pearson.

Special thanks to Jim and Sheila for posting updates on the kites.

We arrived by 6:45 a.m. and I immediately noted a "falcon-like" bird zip
across the road heading toward the river. Within five minutes and during
the next 1 1/2 hours we observed no less than 5 different kites. Two
appeared to be juveniles (first year birds hatched this spring). Jim
Pearson came out and introduced himself and pointed out the nest. Two
juveniles were later observed flying into the top of the tree with the nest
and both Keith and Gordy confirmed the two were "in" the nest. Two other
birds photographed appeared to be sub-adults and the fifth bird
photographed was an adult. Near the end of our visit kites were circling
over the area and one kite that quite possibly could have been a 2nd adult
made a very brief appearance.

The nesting area is in a lovely, well-established residential neighborhood
that has retained many of its trees situated atop a hill that slopes down
to the river. The favored "resting" tree is top of a tree with dead
branches a few short yards from the tree with the nest. Thanks to the
property owner for not cutting this tree down!!!!

Once I can safely maneuver the steps, my next goal is to get photographs
posted to the web site at which time I will notify the va-bird community.

Best wishes,
